In a major setback to former union minister Shanti Bhushan, a revenue court on Friday directed him to pay Rs 1.33 crore stamp duty on purchase of property in the prime Civil Lines locality here.
Shanti Bhushan along with his three children were issued a notice earlier this year by the office of Stamps and Registration for alleged evasion of stamp duty on February 5.
The Bhushans have allegedly evaded the stamp duty by undervaluing their property worth nearly Rs 20 crore. They had purchased the property spread over 7,818 sq.m.
Shanti Bhushan, one of the crusaders against corruption who has been fighting for the cause of Lokpal Bill will also have to pay an interest rate of 1.5 percent on the actual amount starting from November 2010.
The key Team Anna member will also have to pay a penalty amounting to Rs 27.22 lakhs. The court has given one month time to repay all the dues.
Meanwhile, Shanti Bhushan said that he will file a petition against the order. (ZeeNews)
