Maharashtra GST Official Arrested in Anti-Corruption Operation
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested a state tax inspector attached to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Department in Maharashtra in connection with an alleged bribery case involving the processing of a GST registration application.
According to information released by the investigating authorities, the applicant had submitted an online request for obtaining a GST registration number. During the course of the registration process, the concerned GST official, posted at GST Department Nodal-7, Mazgaon, allegedly demanded ₹10,000 for facilitating the processing and issuance of the registration.
The applicant reportedly declined to make the payment and approached the ACB's Worli unit with a complaint regarding the alleged demand. Following verification of the complaint, the anti-corruption agency initiated a trap operation.
During the operation conducted on Wednesday, the GST official was allegedly apprehended while accepting the demanded amount of ₹10,000. The ACB subsequently took the accused into custody and initiated further legal proceedings under the applicable anti-corruption laws.
