The government has set up a committee to recommend measures to boost exports of manufacturing sector. The development comes close on the heels of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh giving an in-principal approval to a new manufacturing policy that aims at creating 10 crore jobs by 2025. Official sources said, the committee will be headed by Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar.
The thrust areas on which the committee is expected to focus are leather, engineering goods, gems and jewellery, textiles and sports goods. It is likely to submit its report in two months. The government had recently come out with a strategy paper which has set a target of about 400 billion dollar export of manufactured products by 2014. Manufacturing goods account for about 80 per cent of country's total exports.
