The Anti-Corruption Bureau of the Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday arrested a Joint Commissioner with the Income Tax Department in Mumbai on the charge of accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from a Mumbai resident. CBI officials said the accused, SK Jangre, had reopened the file regarding the complainant’s income tax assessment and was demanding money from the latter.

“Jangre contacted the complainant’s chartered accountant (CA) and threatened to take action against the complainant. He then told the CA to ask the complainant to meet him so that the matter could be settled. When the complainant met Jangre, he demanded Rs 30 lakh, and the amount was negotiated to Rs 25 lakh,” said a CBI officer.
The complainant then approached the CBI ACB .
“Jangre was caught red handed while accepting the first instalment of Rs five lakh of the bribe amount. Searches were conducted at his office at Piramal Chamber at Parel. Property documents, gold jewellery and gold coins, and some other evidence have been seized during these searches and further inquiries are on,” the officer said.(The Hindu)
