The Karnataka High Court today directed the Central Board of Direct Taxes to extend the due date for filing Tax Audit Reports under Section 44AB of the Income Tax Act, 1961, by one month to 31st October, 2025
The extension was granted in view of the difficulties faced by taxpayers and professionals — particularly delays in release of updated forms/utilities and technical glitches in the e-filing portal.
The petition requesting this extension was filed by the Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association (KSCAA).
The High Court’s direction is interim in nature (i.e., subject to further hearing) and is specific to the jurisdiction of Karnataka
In parallel, the Rajasthan High Court (Jodhpur bench) also ordered a 30-day extension of the audit deadline (to 31 October) in a writ petition by the Tax Bar Association (Bhilwara)
Applicability: Because this is a High Court order, it is valid in Karnataka (i.e. within the jurisdiction of that High Court) only, unless the CBDT issues a nationwide notification adopting the same extension.
If the CBDT or government challenges or files a review (or appeal) in higher courts (e.g. Supreme Court), the extension’s effect and duration may be contested
