The Union government filed a request on Friday for a review of a Supreme Court ruling dismissing a $2.2-billion tax bill imposed on British phone giant Vodafone.
The Supreme Court ruled in January that Indian tax authorities "had no jurisdiction to tax Vodafone" over its $11.1 billion purchase in 2007 of a majority stake in the Indian mobile unit of Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa.
Indian authorities imposed the 112.2 billion rupee ($2.2 billion) tax bill and sought an equal sum in penalties over Vodafone's acquisition of the Indian mobile subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa.
In a review petition lodged in the Supreme Court on Friday, the income tax department argued that the tax act "has not been correctly interpreted." (Times of India)
