CBDT Clears 2.22 Lakh Appeals in FY, Up 29%
The Income Tax Department recorded a significant improvement in dispute resolution during the last financial year by disposing of approximately 2.22 lakh appeals. This represents a notable increase of nearly 29% compared to the previous fiscal, indicating a focused and sustained effort by the department to reduce the backlog of pending cases. The higher disposal rate reflects a strategic push towards faster resolution of tax disputes, thereby easing litigation pressure on both taxpayers and the administration. It also underscores the department’s commitment to enhancing efficiency, transparency, and timely delivery of justice within the tax system.
As per official sources, CBDT Chairman Ravi Agrawal acknowledged these achievements in a communication addressed to departmental officers at the close of the financial year. He commended the collective efforts of the officials in achieving improved performance and highlighted the importance of maintaining this momentum in the upcoming financial year 2026–27. He stressed that future actions and decision-making processes should be increasingly guided by data-driven insights, ensuring that enforcement measures are balanced, proportionate, and aligned with the overarching objective of building a fair, transparent, and taxpayer-friendly tax regime.
The Chairman further pointed out that the department has made substantial progress in strengthening its technological capabilities, particularly in the use of advanced data analytics and intelligence-based systems. These tools are being actively utilised to identify potential risks, detect anomalies, and support informed decision-making in enforcement actions. By leveraging such technology-driven approaches, the department aims to improve accuracy, reduce unnecessary scrutiny, and focus its resources on high-risk areas, ultimately contributing to a more efficient and accountable tax administration system.
