CBDT Cracks Down on Fake Donation Claims, Alerts Taxpayers on Bogus Deductions
PrintThe Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has strengthened its drive to eliminate fraudulent claims of deductions and exemptions, urging taxpayers to voluntarily rectify their income tax returns before tougher enforcement measures are initiated.
In a recent development, the Income Tax Department initiated action against several facilitators and tax return preparers found to be assisting taxpayers in availing false deductions and refunds under the Income Tax Act. As stated in an official communication dated December 13, these operators functioned through an extensive nationwide network of agents and submitted returns containing inaccurate claims in return for commission-based fees.
