Finance Ministry says CBDT strengthens data-based crackdown on false tax deductions
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has intensified its analytics-led efforts to rein in fraudulent tax deduction claims, urging taxpayers to rectify incorrect returns after detecting large-scale abuse of donation-linked exemptions, as per a statement released by the Ministry of Finance on Saturday. The tax department has recently taken action against multiple intermediaries found to be filing income tax returns with bogus claims of deductions and exemptions.
The CBDT observed that several Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPPs) were either non-filers, non-functional at their declared addresses, or not engaged in any political activity. To address such irregularities, the Board has reinforced its data-driven surveillance framework to flag doubtful claims at an early stage and identify high-risk compliance patterns.
