Maharashtra Approves Legislative Amendments to Synchronize State GST Framework with Latest CGST Provisions
The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved proposed amendments to the Maharashtra Goods and Services Tax (MGST) Act, 2017, to align the state's GST legislation with recent changes incorporated under the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Act.
The approved amendments are based on recommendations of the GST Council that have already been adopted within the central GST framework. The proposed revisions aim to ensure consistency between state and central GST laws and facilitate uniform implementation of the indirect tax regime across jurisdictions.
The legislative changes are expected to provide greater clarity in the interpretation and application of GST provisions. Consistency between central and state laws can assist taxpayers and businesses operating across multiple states by reducing compliance complexities and improving regulatory certainty.
The amendments arise from decisions taken during the 56th meeting of the GST Council, which is responsible for recommending GST-related policy and legislative changes. Since GST operates through a dual structure involving both the Centre and States, corresponding amendments in state GST laws are generally introduced following changes at the central level.
The alignment of MGST provisions with the CGST framework is expected to support smoother administration of input tax credit mechanisms, assessments, audits, compliance procedures, and dispute resolution processes. Harmonized provisions may also help reduce interpretational differences and legal disputes under the GST system.
Following cabinet approval, the draft amendment bill will be placed before the state legislature for further consideration and enactment before the revised provisions come into force.
Since the introduction of GST on 1 July 2017, periodic updates to state GST statutes have remained an important part of maintaining a consistent national indirect tax framework. Maharashtra's latest initiative continues this process of legislative alignment to support effective tax administration and compliance.
