The finance ministry has refuted a media report that Income Tax officials were behind the leak of a corporate lobbyist's taped conversations.
"This is to clarify that no official of the Income Tax department has ever communicated any recording of telephonic intercepts to any unauthorised person," the ministry said in a statement on Sunday.
The report alleged that two I-T officials passed on the tapes, via a chartered accountant-broker duo, to three executives of a telecom company which is being investigated in connection with the 2G spectrum scam.
The statement also stressed that a committee set up at the Supreme Court's instance to probe the leak of the tapes is still to submit its report.
