A devastating fire at a bed-and-breakfast property in South Delhi's Malviya Nagar claimed the lives of 21 people on Wednesday, leaving families shattered and raising serious concerns about hotel safety compliance.

Among those who lost their lives was Vivek Agarwal, a Chartered Accountant residing in Sector 46, Gurugram, along with seven members of his family. Vivek had travelled to Delhi to visit his father, Radhe Shyam Agarwal, who is currently undergoing treatment at Max Hospital. Accompanying him were his wife Tarjani Aggarwal, daughters Jivisha and Varya, and four other relatives.

The family had checked into Flourish Stay, a bed-and-breakfast establishment located in the Hauz Rani area of Malviya Nagar, and had reserved two rooms. According to reports, they were having breakfast when the fire suddenly broke out inside the premises. Tragically, all eight family members lost their lives in the incident.

Following the tragedy, Radhe Shyam Agarwal, aged around 80 and hospitalized in Delhi, remains the sole surviving member of Vivek's immediate family. Relatives later reached the hospital to complete formalities, but authorities stated that the bodies would be released only after DNA identification procedures were completed.

The heartbreaking incident has left the residents of Sector 46, Gurugram, in mourning. Neighbours and acquaintances described the family as respected members of the community, and news of the loss has deeply affected the locality.

According to officials, the fire erupted at approximately 8:30 AM and rapidly engulfed the narrow five-storey building. The blaze resulted in the deaths of 21 individuals, including 12 foreign nationals, while several others sustained injuries. Reports suggest that nearly 40 guests were staying at the property when the fire started, with many still asleep at the time.

Preliminary findings have revealed serious concerns regarding the building's safety infrastructure. Delhi Police stated that the property reportedly had only one entry and exit point, significantly limiting evacuation options. In addition, windows were allegedly sealed permanently, while the main entrance operated through a sensor-based system, making escape difficult once the fire intensified.

Questions Raised Over Licensing and Safety Compliance

The tragedy has also triggered scrutiny of the hotel's operating permissions. Sources indicated that the establishment was licensed under the Delhi Government's Bed and Breakfast Scheme, which generally allows operation of up to six guest rooms.

However, investigators are examining claims that the property was functioning with approximately 25 rooms, including accommodation in the basement, far exceeding the permitted capacity. Authorities are expected to investigate whether violations of licensing conditions and fire safety regulations contributed to the scale of the disaster.

As rescue and investigation efforts continue, the incident has once again highlighted the critical importance of strict enforcement of fire safety norms and occupancy regulations in hospitality establishments.
