New Tax Regime Takes Effect in 2026, Bringing Renumbered Income Tax Forms

The Income Tax Department has put out the draft Income-tax Rules, 2026 along with proposed forms, giving taxpayers an early look at how the Income-tax Act, 2025 is likely to be rolled out from April 1, 2026. Although these provisions are still at the consultation stage and may evolve based on feedback, they outline the broad direction of the new tax regime.
 

The draft framework signals a push toward a cleaner and more uniform compliance system, with an emphasis on easier return filing, clearer methods for valuing income and perquisites, and better standardisation across forms and procedures. One of the most noticeable changes is the complete restructuring and renumbering of income tax forms, a move that will impact individual taxpayers, tax professionals, and institutions alike as they transition to the new system.
