Over 24.6 Lakh ITRs Pending Beyond 90 Days Out of 8.80 Crore Filed for AY 2025-26
More than 24.64 lakh income tax returns (ITRs) filed for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025–26 remain pending for processing beyond 90 days, according to information shared in Parliament. The disclosure was made in response to a query regarding the status of delayed return processing as of January 31, 2026.
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, stated that out of the total 8,79,62,234 ITRs submitted by taxpayers up to February 4, 2026, around 24,64,044 returns have been awaiting processing for more than three months. The data highlights that while the majority of returns have been handled within the prescribed timeline, a significant number are still pending beyond 90 days.
The minister also provided updates on the impact of the government’s NUDGE campaign, an initiative aimed at encouraging voluntary compliance and accurate reporting by taxpayers. Over the past two years, the campaign has led to the filing of approximately 1.11 crore updated or revised income tax returns, resulting in additional tax payments amounting to ₹6,976.50 crore.
Furthermore, in December 2025, adjustments related to refund claims and additional or reduced tax payments amounted to ₹1,834 crore, reflecting continued activity in return revisions and tax settlements.
Overall, the figures indicate strong taxpayer participation in filing returns for AY 2025–26, alongside ongoing efforts by the tax department to enhance compliance and process pending returns efficiently.
