Taxpayers with Unreported Foreign Income Asked to Update ITRs by Dec 31
The Income Tax Department has asked people to revise their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) by December 31 if they forgot to report any foreign income or overseas assets for the last financial year.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is encouraging such taxpayers to correct their returns under its NUDGE campaign, which uses data to remind and guide people to follow tax rules. As part of this second NUDGE campaign, the department will send SMS and email alerts from November 28, 2025, asking taxpayers to check and update their ITRs before December 31, 2025, to avoid penalties.
In the first NUDGE campaign, started on November 17, 2024, around 24,678 taxpayers revised their returns for AY 2024–25, revealing foreign assets worth Rs 29,208 crore and foreign income of Rs 1,089.88 crore.
